The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today 955 new COVID-19 cases and 23 deaths. The total number of cases in the state is 163,703 in 102 counties, with a total of 7,324 deaths. IDPH says that in the past 24 hours, 29,745 test specimens have been processed, with a positivity rate of 3.2%. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity rate from July 14 to July 20 is 3.1%. Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours increased from 1,410 patients to 1,466 patients. Of that figure, 320 patients were in the ICU, with 142 patients on ventilators.

IDPH says it is closely monitoring a rise in cases in the Metro East region, COVID-19 region 4, as the region surpasses 7% positivity rate as of Monday, fueled by seven consecutive days of positivity rate increases. Under the COVID-19 Mitigation Plan announced last week by Governor Pritzker and IDPH, a region will automatically move to the first tier of mitigation steps following three consecutive days averaging greater than an 8% positivity rate. Randolph and St. Clair counties are currently the primary contributors to the rise in positivity rate in region 4, but there are concerning trends and behaviors throughout the region, which also includes Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and Washington counties. Several of these counties also border and are home to residents who travel frequently to Missouri where less stringent mitigations have been in place.

Today’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures show more than 3.8 million confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., with 140,630 deaths.

Today’s WHO Coronavirus Disease Dashboard shows more than 14.5 million COVID-19 cases globally, with more than 607,000 deaths. The Region of the Americas (includes the U.S.) continues to lead the world with more than 7.7 million cases and more than 311,000 deaths.
