The Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) announced today 1,471 new COVID-19 cases and 19 deaths. The total number of cases in the state is 184,712 in 102 counties, with a total of 7,545 deaths. IDPH says that in the past 24 hours, 42,598 test specimens have been processed, with a positivity rate of 3.45%. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity rate from July 28 to August 3 is 3.9%. Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours increased from 1,418 patients to 1,496 patients. Of that figure, 365 patients were in the ICU, with 125 patients on ventilators.
During a stop at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale today, Governor J.B. Pritzker said that the COVID-19 outbreak in southern Illinois is worse than it is in Chicago. “I’m here today because the COVID-19 pandemic, which once seemed tame in Carbondale and throughout the entire region, is surging here. It’s worse than in Chicago. And I’ll be frank, if we don’t see some change here, the virus will cause some businesses to close and an increasing percentage of people to get sick and some will even die,” said Governor Pritzker. Jackson County is among 11 counties in the state listed at the “warning level” by IDPH.
Monday’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures showed more than 4.6 million confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., with 154,471 deaths.
Today’s WHO Coronavirus Disease Dashboard shows more than 18.1 million COVID-19 cases globally, with more than 691,000 deaths. The Region of the Americas (includes the U.S.) continues to lead the world with more than 9.7 million cases and more than 365,000 deaths.
