State, National, Global COVID-19 Update

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today 601 new COVID-19 cases and 38 deaths. The total number of cases in the state is 137,825 in 101 counties, with a total of 6,707 deaths. IDPH says that in the past 24 hours, 20,507 test specimens have been processed, with a positivity rate of 2.9%. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity rate from June 16 to June 22 is 2%. Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours increased from 1,628 patients to 1,648 patients. Of that figure, 424 patients are in the ICU, with 236 patients on ventilators.
At a press briefing this afternoon, Governor J.B. Pritzker said all four regions of the state are on track to move to Phase 4 of his reopening plan this Friday. He said the state is issuing guidance for local P-12 school districts and higher education institutions to resume in-person learning this fall to keep students, teachers and families safe. Also, IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike urged residents to follow the three Ws: wash your hands; watch your distance; and wear face coverings.
Today’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures show more than 2.3 million confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., with 120,333 deaths.
Today’s WHO Situation Report shows more than 8.9 million COVID-19 cases globally, with more than 469,000 deaths. The Region of the Americas (includes the U.S.) continues to lead the world with more than 4.4 million cases and more than 224,000 deaths.
