National COVID-19 Update

Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures show a total of 330,891 confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. in 55 states and U.S. territories, with 8,910 deaths. New York state leads the nation with more than 119,000 cases, followed by New Jersey which has more than 37,000 cases and Michigan which has more than 15,700 cases.

The CDC has developed a weekly surveillance summary of U.S. COVID-19 activity called COVIDView. The latest release, data as of April 4, is available here.

The CDC will hold a call on April 8 at 3 p.m. CT to provide an update on the COVID-19 response for rural stakeholders and communities.  To submit questions in advance, please e-mail ruralhealth@cdc.gov with "Rural Health Update 4/8" in the subject line. Registration is required.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has developed an industry hotline for coronavirus COVID-19 diagnostic tests and shortages. The toll free number—888-INFO-FDA (option*)—can be used for questions on all personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators. The webpage includes email addresses for shortages and diagnostic tests.

The latest WHO situation report shows more than 1.2 million COVID-19 cases globally, with over 67,500 deaths. The European Region leads the world in cases and deaths, with more than 655,000 confirmed cases with over 49,000 deaths. The Region of the Americas (includes the U.S.) is in second place, reporting more than 352,000 cases and more than 9,600 deaths. The WHO says that almost 90% of the world’s students—more  than 1.5 billion children—are affected by nationwide school closures.
