MAIC considers the full range of physician coverage needs to ensure you’re covered during every phase in your medical career.

Suspended Coverage

We offer suspended coverage when you take a leave from your practice from just one month to up 12 months. Coverages applies only to the following reasons for your leave: maternity leave, illness, travel or completing your fellowship. While we do not cover direct patient care, premiums are reduced by 75% during your leave.

Part-Time Physician Coverage

Individual physicians who work part-time may qualify for significant premium reductions.

Retired Physician Tail Coverage

MAIC provides, at no-cost, extended reporting endorsement to any named insured who retires and has been insured with MAIC for a minimum of five consecutive years and is at least 55 years old.

Tail Coverage for Disability or Death

Our extended reporting endorsement comes at no charge to a named insured who dies or suffers a disability.

Newly Practicing Physician Coverage

Reduced rates apply to physicians entering medical practice for the first time or who enter a new specialty for the first time after completing medical training.  Special discounted rates are available for the first four full years of practice if you’re insured with MAIC from the start of your new practice.

Led by our risk management experts, our on-site assessments of your office practice or practice environment can offer invaluable insights. The assessment includes a thorough review of office procedures and documentation practices. With this information, we identify areas that might benefit from improved risk management practices.

We’ll provide a report of findings and risk management recommendations a few weeks after the assessment visit. Importantly, one of our risk consultants will meet with you and your staff to discuss the report and help prioritize, develop, and implement our risk reduction and loss control recommendations.

While optional, participation in an on-site assessment and implementation of recommendations may result in premium discounts.

Our Risk AdvantageSM discount program is a unique opportunity for physicians to work with our staff experts toward our common goals of reducing risk, preserving professional integrity and reputation, preventing lawsuits, and improving quality care.

As part of this collaborative efforts, physicians can receive up to an 8% discount on MAIC premiums, often earning continuing medical credits (CMEs). By participating, you’ll gain practical strategies to minimize risk while saving money at the same time.

Risk AdvantageSM discounts are available by completing risk management education:

  • In-person programs and in-service training: Earn a 1% discount per hour of participation, with a maximum discount of up to 4% per year, not to exceed the total maximum premium discount of 8% per year
  • Online courses: Earn a 1% discount per course completed, with a maximum of 4% per year, not to exceed the total premium maximum discount of 8% per year.
  • Focus case studies: Earn 4% discount for completing a total of 16 focus case studies, not to exceed the total maximum premium discount of 8% per year.

Our educational programs are offered free of charge. Continuing medical education credits are available for most of the programs.

Discounts earned are applicable only to the renewal term immediately following the policy period in which they are earned and do not apply to any future renewal periods. We do not award fractional percentages. Numbers will be rounded down, e.g. 3.5 hours of participation equals a 3% discount.  Maximum Risk Advantage premium discount per year is 8%.
